Association of Disabled Professionals

For many years, society did not recognise the abilities of disabled people. Although some work had been carried out to support disabled people to gain skilled, semi-skilled and clerical work, very little support was given to disabled people who wanted to enter or remain working in the professions or who considered work in management.
The ADP was formed in 1971 to remedy this situation and to provide a forum for disabled people to share both their problems and their experiences of successful personal development and valued work, as well as to help create conditions for other disabled people to realise their full potential.

Our work advice service uses a practical, common sense approach with experienced disabled advisors to overcome difficulties in employment or self employment. We focus on providing support, advice and information to ensure that disabled people and people with long term health conditions are able to fully contribute to the workforce.

Our aim is to support everyone with any form of impairment to find, retain and progress in the full range of available work opportunities. We would therefore be happy to talk to you whether you are an employer, a representative of an organisation, or an individual.
With many years experience, as a national advice service the ADP and the Disabled Entrepreneurs’ Network, we are widely practiced in providing an appropriate, professional service that is individually tailored to your needs.

We are able to advise on issues relating to employment and self employment, using our work with statutory, voluntary and private sector organisations, as well as individuals with long term health conditions and disabled people. This, in combination with access to therapeutic services offered by a psychologist enables us to provide comprehensive and complete solutions to remove the barriers to participation.

In terms of employment, we provide support to individuals and employers on issues including:
• seeking employment;
• recruitment and application procedures;
• retention of existing staff who may develop impairments;
• solution focused support to facilitate inclusion and appropriate reasonable adjustments;
• support with Access to Work; and
• support to become more “Disability Confident”.

With regards to self employment, we provide business support that is tailored to the needs of disabled people and people with long term health conditions. Our service continues the award winning work provided by the Disabled Entrepreneurs’ Network (DEN), which was established in 2001. The DEN exists to provide networking opportunities, work related mentoring and information services for self-employed disabled people and those setting up and running their own small businesses. Again, the information and support is provided by disabled entrepreneurs for disabled people.
