Originally a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist, Philippa became involved with manual handling in 1992. Since then she has worked in the NHS, within research programmes and then across the private, public and third sectors as an ergonomist, moving and handling consultant and expert witness , before returning to the NHS and the North East in 2013 to take up her present post. She is now strategic manager of ergonomic and manual handling services at Northumbria Healthcare Trust, dealing with policy, procedure and practice throughout integrated care.
She holds qualifications in physiotherapy, moving and handling, biomechanics and health ergonomics; in the past Philippa has served as both National Secretary and (twice) National Chairman of National Back Exchange, the professional organisation of moving and handling experts. She remains an advanced member.
Her published work includes co-authorship of the 4th and 5th editions of “Guide to the Handling of People” and co-authorship of both editions of the CSP Guidance on Manual Handling in Physiotherapy. She is both a national and international speaker and workshop presenter, including many UK conferences and in USA, Australia, Denmark, Mexico, Belgium, South Korea and Hungary. In her spare time she is involved with GirlGuidingUK and Northumbria advanced Motorcycle club.
This session will examine the possible reasons why a person may be reluctant or unwilling to stand from a sitting position and then look at practical methods of overcoming these, with or without relevant assistive equipment.
