Fern Lulham

Freelance Broadcaster, Public Speaker and Voiceover Artist

Born severely visually impaired and now registered blind, Fern's passion for communication started in early childhood when she would use an egg-whisk for a microphone to "interview" friends and family! That passion still burns as brightly as ever, so it's little wonder that she is now a freelance public speaker, radio broadcaster, qualified psychotherapist, accredited disability awareness trainer and just for good measure, one of very few blind audio description narrators globally.

Growing up with a disability, Fern understands the struggles people face whether disabled or not, so she can form a strong connection with them through her speaking. Her TEDx talk entitled "What online dating looks like when you're blind" is a perfect example, dealing as it does with issues like self acceptance, rejection and victim blaming. Indeed, her fascination with such topics inspired her to undertake a four year course to gain her qualification as a psychotherapist.

Never one to pass up the chance of an adventure, Fern gained her degree in Radio Broadcasting Communication thousands of miles from home at Western Carolina University in the USA. She uses that experience as a presenter, reporter and producer for many radio programmes, including for BBC Radio 4 and the World Service. Her audio description narration includes the award winning track for the Netflix production, "All The Light We Cannot See".

As a blind speaker, Fern has made it her mission to make every person in her audience feel seen and see themselves more clearly than ever before.
