Jayne Gets Her Life Back with Ford Independence™

To many wheelchair users a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) is more than just a car, it’s a source of freedom and independence to get out and about on your own terms.  

Indeed, for Jayne Dalee from Hull, her new Ford Independence™ WAV, lived up to its title.  

To find out more about Jayne’s life with Ford Independence™, we caught up with her and her daughter Leona. 

Life Before a WAV  

Prior to the delivery of Independence™, Jayne was often stuck in her bedroom, missing out on family gatherings and the chance to go to the shops and pick out her own things. Leona tells us, 

“For the last four years she’s been stuck in the bedroom, she’s not been able to go anywhere.” 

Due to a lack of reliable transport, Leona shares that Jayne’s health was being also impacted: 

“She was having to rely on taxis and they were letting her down a lot so she missed a lot of appointments, quite major appointments as well, but because she was paralysed they couldn’t come to her and she couldn’t go to them.” 

Allied Experience 

Reflecting on her experience with Allied Mobility, Jayne tells us mobility consultant Des was a huge help during her free home demonstration: 

“Des showed us how to get [into the car] safely, how to secure me safely and strap me in. I’ve got so much freedom now.” 

Life of the Party 

Talking about how her new WAV has impacted her life Jayne tells us that not only can she travel with all her family now, she’s also able to socialise more: 

“We went out for a family dinner for the first time in 10 years, we wouldn’t have been able to have had it without the WAV.” 

Jayne continues, “My son’s birthday, I couldn’t even go to the party because I couldn’t get a taxi but now, I could go to any party, so that’s good, isn’t it?”

I’ve Got My Life Back 

Discussing how Independence™ has provided Jayne with a new sense of freedom, Leona says, 

“Now she’s got this vehicle, it’s given her access to be able to go to the shop and actually pick her own things instead of having to ask the carers to go for her. It’s basically given her options to go see the family, go out and have a family meal. This vehicle has really helped her in many ways. It’s given her more life. ” 

“It’s just given her more opportunity to be able to go out and do things and feel more human again and have fun,” Leona adds.  

 “I’m happy now I can get out, I’ve got my life back,” Jayne concludes with a smile.
